According to the legend of 51 Shaktipeeth, Maa Durga was born as Sati and she was married to Lord Shiva as the daughter of king Prajapati Daksha. Prajapati Daksha didn’t like Lord Shiva. So, to revenge this insult, Sati’s father Raja Daksha organized a yajna. Where Lord Shiva was not invited. Seeing all this in front of all others, Sati felt very bad and she got burnt in Yajna. Then Lord Shiva took Devi Sati and start Tandav by seeing to stop all this, Lord Vishnu served the burning body of Sati into 51 pieces, So that Lord Shiva would calm and stop his Tandav.
According to ancient legend, this place is said to have been discovered by a Durga devotee named Maidas in the 14th century. Maidas was born in Athur village Riyasat Patiala. Maidas had two elder brothers- Durgadas and Devidas. Most of the time Maidas was spent in worship. Therefore he couldn’t contribute to the family’s work. So the brothers separated Maidas from the family. After separation, Maidas continued to spend his time in worship. One day Maidas was going to his in-law's house. On the way, he sat down to rest under a banyan tree He got an eye and in his dreams, he saw a divine stunning girl who was telling him that Maidas! Make my Pindi in the middle under this vat tree and worship it. All your suffering will be removed. Maidas didn’t understand anything & went to his in-law's house but after returning his footsteps stopped again at the same place. Then he sat under the same vat tree and began to pray. Devi said to him that, I am sitting under that vat tree since time immemorial. People have forgotten me. You are my supreme devotee. So stay here & worship here only. I will give you everything and also protect your family. Maidas said that how I worship you while staying here. There is neither water nor a suitable place to live in dense forests. Maa Durga said that I give you fearless donation that if you go to any place & uproot any stone, water will come out from there. You should worship me with this water.Today under this vat tree, there is the biggest temple of Chintpurni and the stone is also kept in that temple. According to Puranas, this place is situated between the four Mahaudras. There is another Kaleshwar Mahadev, Shivwadi on the other side, and also a beautiful pond. The name of that place was Chhaporah which is nowadays called Chintpurni. The management of this temple is under the control of the Himachal Government since 12 June 1987. Roads and markets of that place are well established and people have been come from far in Shaktipeeth to worship their God.
